Hi there!
The time of high tide in Miyajima will vary by day.
So the easiest way to check the Miyajima tide time is to google something like “miyajima high tide” or something.
Okay, so on the surface, it would seem like Miyajima at high tide is better than Miyajima at low tide.
And maybe it is.
I mean…
Miyajima at high tide…
Miyajima at low tide…
Which is prettier? 😉
But good thing we are not superficial people. 😉
In an ideal world, you have a full day in Miyajima so you will be on the island for both high tide and low tide.
So then your day trip from Hiroshima to Miyajima would look like this:
- Get to Miyajima in the morning
- See the torii at low tide
- Go for the Mount Misen hike for amazing views
- Head back to the now floating torii where you will find it to be high tide and a seemingly magical transformation!
Or if you are on Miyajima when it’s high tide in the morning and low tide in the afternoon… the opposite!
When is high tide on Miyajima and when is low tide?!
This varies day to day.
So…
Check the Miyajima tide schedule before you go
You can check this website for the current day’s high tide and low tide times, and there’s also a calendar so you can check future individual dates.
Itsukushima refers to Miyajima island.
👆 The official Miyajima tourism website used to have the tide times on their website but I don’t see it anymore. In any case, you can visit their website for more ideas of things to do in Miyajima with their “model courses“! (aka sample itineraries.) In general, when you go to a new city in Japan, the tourist information center is a GREAT start! They often have a tourist map, in English!
The first column is the date of the month. In the other columns you can see the time of high tide and low tide, and the other numbers next to the time of day indicate the water level in cm.
And one more website outside what the official Miyajima websites use…
This tide chart for Itsukushima might be your preferred way to check the graph with what might be a way to better see tide times at a quick glance.
So, you’ve got options. 😉
A general google search of Miyajima tide times will show you what you need to know too!
Okay, so you’ve checked the tide times…
What if your itinerary is only allowing you a couple of hours on Miyajima (better than nothing!) and you won’t be able to stick around for the high tide time?
Well, low tide can give you a special experience too!
Here is a quick list of things that you can’t do when Miyajima is at high tide!
1. Walk to the torii shrine gate
2. Get up close and personal with the torii
3. Go up to the torii
4. Put a coin in the torii
And finally, there is more to Miyajima than just the floating torii at high tide!
If you can’t get to the floating torii at high tide, the next best thing on Miyajima are the views at the Mount Misen summit!
Hike
Observatory

HAPPY MIYAJIMA TIDE PLANNING!
Is a JR pass worth it?!
- Google maps can make it easy to figure out whether or not you should get a JR pass!
- In google maps, type in your departure and arrival city, and choose the transit icon. The route will come up, and so will the estimated cost at the bottom!
- Here is an example of a train route with cost on google maps.
- So do that for all of your long distance routes to figure out how much it might cost.
- Next, go here to see how much a JR pass costs from an official JR pass vendor (and partner of this website).
- And compare!
- Not all forms of public transportation are JR, but long distance shinkansen bullet trains are, and that's where the most cost savings will come.
