Hi there!
The Izumi is special to the Diamond Princess.
The Izumi is the “Japanese bath” area of the cruise ship.
The only cruise ship you will find the Izumi on is the Diamond Princess.

👆 The iconic Izumi Japanese bath that can be seen in public view is the cooling bath on the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

👆 The Izumi Japanese bath hot tubs with ocean views are in a private area only for Izumi pass holders.

While there are hot tubs on the Diamond Princess that are free for all, the Izumi hot tubs are in an area of the ship that requires paid access.
They limit the number of passes that are given out each day, so that limits the number of people that will be at the Izumi throughout the day.
You can buy an Izumi day pass and you can also buy a package to be able to go to the Izumi every day during your cruise.

👆 The Izumi Japanese bath is only for people with an Izumi pass. Your pass will allow you to go in and out throughout the day as you please.
At a traditional Japanese bath (“onsen“), you take a shower before you enter the bath.
There are a number of shower stalls at the Izumi, both public and private, so the proper etiquette would be to shower before you enter the hot tub (“bath”).
The Izumi is at the back of the ship, and hot tubs come with ocean views!
The Izumi hot tubs have a women’s section and a men’s section.
At a traditional Japanese onsen, clothing is not allowed.
When I was being given a tour of the Izumi by a Japanese spa staff person, there actually was a woman who was in the hot tub (“bath”) without any clothes on.
I asked the spa staff if you’re supposed to take off your clothes, and she said no.
Although the way the Izumi is described on the official Princess website, it makes it seem like clothing is optional.

👆 Men and women have separate areas at the Izumi Japanese baths on the Diamond Princess. Red for women, black for men!
There is also a sauna at the Izumi.
There is also an outdoor section of the Izumi, only for Izumi pass holders, and outside is the “cooling bath” designed to be used after your hot tub experience so you can cool down after your hot bath!
In March 2023, I got an acupuncture package while on the Diamond Princess.
Because I bought the acupuncture sessions as a package, it came with one free day pass for the Izumi.
And so, I have pictures from the Izumi on the Diamond Princess!

👆 You can get your Izumi day pass by going to the Izumi receptionist desk at the back of the ship.

👆 There’s a lounge area indoors located in an area that’s not separated for men and women.
Now, going through the women’s area…

👆 Upon entry, there will be slippers. If you want to stick to Japanese tradition, you’ll take off your shoes and put on some slippers.
Then you’ll see a seating area.
There is also a scale so you can weigh yourself.
There is also a wringing spin machine so you can wring out the water of your bathing suit.

👆 Scale.

👆 Put your bathing suit in the machine, then press down, and most of the water will be taken out!

👆 There are bins for used towels.

👆 There is a bathroom at the Izumi.
You’ll go through the curtains to get to the baths.

Through the curtains is where you’ll find lockers if you want to securely store anything while you’re here.
You’ll probably want to ask the Izumi spa staff how to use the locker if you want to use the lock feature.
You will find towels and a bathrobe in this area as well, which you are free to take.
So you don’t need to bring your own towel.

And then onwards to the bath area!

You’ll immediately see some showers.
There are private showers and not-so-private showers.
The showers are for before and after your bath use.
You can clean yourself before you get in the hot tub.
There are shower stalls with soap.

And now that you’ve rinsed off… take your pick for which hot tub you want to enter!
There are 2 sides.

👆 There is an Izumi hot tub that is handicap accessible.
The Izumi sauna is next to the hot tubs.

👆 The hot coals for the sauna.

And then once you’ve finished heating yourself up in either the hot tub or the sauna… you can head outside to cool yourself down in the cooling bath!

There is also a cooling foot bath, along with outdoor showers.

Or you can just go lay out in the Izumi area outside!
