Hi there!
In October 2022, I was on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Hawaii to Japan in economy aka the main cabin.
This was a flight from Honolulu HNL to Osaka KIX.
The Hawaiian Airlines meal plan is generally the same for all Japan airports, which includes Tokyo (Narita NRT, Haneda HND) and Osaka.

Yes, you get free meals on flights to Japan when you fly on Hawaiian Airlines!

Of course, things can change!
So it’s best to confirm directly with the Hawaiian Airlines website if you have a confirmed flight or if it’s important in making your decision to fly Hawaiian Airlines to Japan!
How many meals do you get on Hawaiian Airlines?
You get 2 complimentary meals on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Japan.
I will show you below what food was served on my flight, and what time the meals were served.
Are drinks free on Hawaiian Airlines?
Drinks are free on Hawaiian Airlines.
There will be a drink cart that comes around with complimentary drinks several times throughout the flight, and that includes at meal times.
Alcohol is also free on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Japan.
Again, things can change so best to confirm!

👆 You get free drinks on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Japan. I requested green tea every chance I had! Although, water is a better choice on a long flight to Japan. 😜 (They say to avoid caffeine on long flights. You also want to stay well-hydrated when you’re in the air! This is also said to help fight jet lag once you land in Japan.)
What food is served on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to Japan?
According to the Hawaiian Airlines website, the menu is the same from September 2022 to February 2023.
That said, the meal offerings on my flight were different from what was listed.
So, menus can change!
If you are flying business class to Japan on Hawaiian Airlines, then have a look at the business class food menu.
Now here is the food I got on my flight to Japan in economy. Everything was free.
The food that’s served on a Hawaiian Airlines flight varies based on your destination.
The food I got on my Hawaiian Airlines flight to Japan was different from the food on my Hawaiian Airlines flight to Hawaii.

👆 2:35pm Hawaii time / 9:35am Japan time: Scheduled departure time.

👆 3:15pm Hawaii time / 10:15am Japan time: Small snack and drink is served.
Shortly after that, the first meal was served.

👆 3:45pm Hawaii time / 10:45am Japan time: First meal is served.
We were given a choice between beef and pork.
I chose pork.
So pork was part of the main meal, which was served with rice, fruit, bread, and a sweet snack.
The drink cart came around again so you can get a drink to go with your meal.
If you have special meal requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, child meal), that is something you request ahead of time, “at least 48 hours” before your flight.
Shortly after the flight attendants collected the trash from the meals, the lights were dimmed and the plane became dark.

I was happy that I brought a water bottle on the plane! I brought an empty water bottle through the security checkpoint, and then filled the water bottle past security. (I also brought along green tea powder so I could easily have green tea!)

If you do want water during the flight at non-meal times, I think it would be no problem to ask the flight attendant for some water.
This is one of the things I have done on long flights to Japan.
You can push the flight attendant call button to have them come to you, or you can head to the back of the plane to go find them to retrieve the water yourself. (I think #2 is the better option since it will also make for an excuse to get up and stretch out a bit!)
It wasn’t until the next meal time that lights on the plane came back on.

👆 10:30pm Hawaii time / 5:30pm Japan time: Second meal is served.
There was no choice.
Everyone got the same thing.
This was a sandwich and small snack.
Actually the whole “meal” seemed like a small snack since I generally don’t consider a sandwich like this to be all that filling.
Around 11:30pm Hawaii time / 6:30pm Japan time: Plane touched down in Japan.

Is this enough food for a flight to Japan?!
I did not eat much before my flight to Japan.
Maybe for that reason, if I would have been reliant only on the food that was served at meal times, I am pretty sure I would have ended up quite hungry.
And also since I didn’t eat much before the flight, after I finished the first meal I felt like it wouldn’t be long before I’m hungry again.
It was announced at the beginning of the flight that the next meal was going to be served towards the end of the flight which felt like a long time away!
So after the first meal was served, I asked a flight attendant if there would be snacks available again before the next meal.
On my Japan Airlines flight to Japan (from the US), they made snacks available for the taking at the back of the plane. (See more Japan Airlines food!) So I was wondering if there might be something similar on this Hawaiian Airlines flight.
Well, the answer was no.
But, thanks to a super accommodating flight attendant, I was actually offered more food!
I was standing in line for the bathroom when a flight attendant came over to me and asked if I liked sweet or salty. I said salty, and a few minutes later I was offered a bunch of salty snacks!
And then I was even offered another meal since they had extra meals left over!! (I didn’t even ask!)
So, if you do want more food, it is worth asking (nicely!) if they have any extra snacks they can give you.
Maybe you will end up with kind Hawaiian Airlines flight attendants too!
