Hi there!

If you want to stay at a placeĀ that’s a bit of a “Japanese feeling” when in Nagano, then consider staying at 1166 Backpackers Hostel when you’re in Nagano city!

Here’s a bit of what you can expect with a stay here.

Nagano train station to 1166 backpackers hostel

To walk to this hostel, it’s about a 20 minute walk.

Otherwise, there’s a bus that will get you closer.

Direct from the 1166 backpackers hostel website:

Catch the bus going to Zenkoji (every bus from terminal 1)

Get off at HANANO KOJI stop

Walk along the street just few meters.

Turn left narrow path and walk down 1 block.

1166 backpackers is on your right.

So this will be about a 6 minute bus ride, and it will likely around around 150 yen (around US$1).

But it’s really not a bad walk. You can basically walk straight down one of the main streets in Nagano.

Once you get close, you’ll turn onto a small little street.

The hostel is a little discreet, so you’ll want to look out for the sign that’s on the road.

There’s a passcode required to enter, and you’ll get this number after you check in so you can freely come and go.

Another of the “Japanese feeling” type things here is no shoes inside! There are slippers for you to wear at the door entry.

Kitchen

There’s also a kitchen.

Once of the easiest snacks/meals you can make is ramen noodles! You can by the easy-make kind at convenience stores (there’s one kind of nearby the hostel), and then all you need to do is add hot water and wait a few minutes!

Dorm rooms and private rooms

I stayed in a dorm room while here, but there are private rooms available too.

The private rooms are “Japanese-style” which means there will be a set-up with futon to sleep on the floor.

I stayed here when there was cold weather outside.

In Japanese residences (aka local homes), there generally isn’t central heating.

Instead, each room is heated up separately.

And that’s how it was at this hostel too.

There’s a small heater to turn on in the room when you are there. The common area also has a similar heater.
