The Matsumoto bus terminal is located in a building with restaurants, cafes, and a grocery store.

There are also coin lockers if you want to leave your luggage here while you go out and spend a couple of hours walking the streets of Matsumoto.

Where can you go by direct bus from Matsumoto?


The pictures of bus timings below are what was posted when I was in Matsumoto in March 2019.
This includes taking a bus from Matsumoto to:
- Takayama
- Hirayu onsen
- Tokyo
- Kyoto
- Osaka
- Nagano city
- Hakuba
- Nagoya
- Shirahone Onsen
- Matsumoto airport

This list of bus timings is ONLY to give you an idea of what type of bus frequency you might be able to expect!
This can tell you, that YES, it’s possible to get to these places by bus!
Bus timings can change, and some bus routes are seasonal.
Be sure to confirm bus timings!
And, while this tells you what DIRECT buses are available, it’s not the only way to get around. If you’re not liking some of the limited timings, you might consider splitting up your journey too.

Possible bus timings for bus from Matsumoto


Bus from Matsumoto:

Matsumoto to Takayama

You can find buses possibly every 2 hours.
The time on bus will be around 2.5 hours from Matsumoto to Takayama.

Matsumoto to Hirayu onsen
The bus to Hirayu is the same as the bus to Takayama. This bus will stop in Hirayu before continuing onwards to Takayama.
The time on bus will be around 1.5 hours to get from Matsumoto to Hirayu.
Matsumoto to Tokyo (Shinjuku)

You can find buses possibly at least once an hour throughout the day to get from Matsumoto to Tokyo. The bus will go to the Shinjuku bus terminal which is the main bus station in Tokyo for long-distance buses.
The time on bus will be around 4 hours.
Matsumoto to Kyoto

To go to Kyoto, the timings are limited so you’ll want to plan your day if you want to go by bus!
You might find buses to to Kyoto 3 times a day – once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then once in late evening.
The time on bus will be around 5 hours to get to Kyoto from Matsumoto.

Matsumoto to Osaka
The bus from Matsumoto to Osaka will be the same as the bus from Matsumoto to Kyoto. It will stop in Kyoto first, before continuing on to Osaka.
So similarly,Β you might find buses to Osaka 3 times a day – once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and then once in late evening.
The time on bus will be around 6 hours to get to Osaka from Matsumoto.

Matsumoto to Nagano

You can find buses possibly every 2 hours from Matsumoto to Nagano.
The time on bus will be around 1.5 hours.

Matsumoto to Hakuba

You can find buses possibly once a day from Matsumoto to Hakuba.
The time on bus will be around 2 hours.

This is listed as 1,800 yen (US$17) one way, and 2,800 yen (US$26) for a round-trip ticket.
I went in the opposite direction by train. It wasn’t a direct train as it did require a transfer, but here’s my journey from Hakuba to Matsomoto by train.
I made a stop in Matsumoto for just a few hours before continuing on to go to Takayama.
So basically, I went from Hakuba to Takayama with a stop in Matsumoto to walk around and explore Matsumoto for a few hours!
Matsumoto to Nagoya

You can find buses possibly every 2-3 hours from Matsumoto to Nagoya.
The time on bus will be around 3.5 hours.
Matsumoto to Matsumoto Airport

You can find buses possibly 3 times a day from Matsumoto to the airport.
The time on bus will be around 30 minutes.
This is listed at 600 yen (US$6) for a bus ticket to the airport.
Matsumoto to Shirahone Onsen

You can find buses possibly once a day from Matsumoto to Shirahone Onsen.
The time on bus will be around 2.5 hours.
This is listed as 1,950 yen (US$18) one way, and 3,500 yen (US$32) for a round-trip ticket.
