Hi there!
So you’re headed to Takayama!
GOOD! 😉
Takayama and the area of the Japan Alps is a little off the main tourist golden route of Japan, and you’ll find plenty of very “Japanese” experiences in this area.
Takayama has an “old city” in which you can visit little shops, and it also makes a good launch point for a number of day trips too.
When I visited here, I got to Takayama from the Hakuba mountains by first going from Hakuba to Matsumoto by train, and then Matsumoto to Takayama by bus.

Now…
Here’s a bit more about the K’s House Takayama hostel
…since this is where I stayed!
Similar to K’s House hostels in Tokyo and the K’s House hostels near Mt Fuji, there are 2 K’s House hostels in Takayama.
One is called just “K’s House Takayama” and the other is called “K’s House Takayama Oasis.”
I stayed at the “Takayama” location.

Welcome to Takayama! Once you arrive in Takayama, you will get to know this little guy quickly. This is the Hida mascot for the Takayama area, and you will find this everywhere!
How’s the location of this hostel?!

Near the Takayama bus station and train station

K’s House Takayama is located a short walk from the bus station, maybe about a 5 minute walk.
I did a couple of day trips by bus when I was in Takayama (to Shirakawago and to Shinhotaka) so it was highly convenient to be located near the bus station!
And since I also arrived to Takayama by bus (from Matsumoto), it also meant I was checking in just shortly after I arrived!
The JR Takayama train station is also right next to the bus station.
Near Old City

This is one of the main things that Takayama city is known for, and this is also just a short walk of about 5 minutes to get to from the hostel.
Near ramen shops

Just as “Sapporo ramen” in Hokkaido is a thing, “Takayama ramen” is a thing too.
So if you are wanting to try different types of Japanese food when you’re in Japan, this is one of the Takayama local specialty foods to eat.
There are a number of different restaurants serving Takayama ramen within a 15 minute walk of the hostel.
Capsule hotel style dorm rooms
At this hostel, the beds were kind of like a “capsule hotel” style in that you get your own kind of private space.
There was a curtain with each bed space.
As is standard for hostels across Japan, you’ll make your own bed.

This hostel also had a double bed available for 2 people in a shared room.

Common area

Kitchen
The 7-eleven convenience store is around the corner and is about a 5 minute walk. You can find some food here to make use of the the kitchen.
It’s a pretty well-equipped kitchen with basic cookware and utensils available for use.
There’s a fridge, microwave, toaster, and stove.

Free green tea
You can make your own green tea from tea leaves! (Not just a tea bag!)

And…
Shoe drying rack
SO helpful if you’re walking around in rain and you don’t have waterproof shoes! 😉

And then…
How to occupy your time with several nights in Takayama?!
