So the Kameoka torokko station is one of 4 train stations that are on the Sagano scenic railway line.
All of the train stations that are on this train line are called “torokko” stations:
- Saga torokko station
- Arashiyama torokko station
- Hozukyo torokko station
- Kameoka torokko station
If you’ll be taking the Sagano scenic train, you’ll choose to take the train from Saga, Arashiyama, or Kameoka. Which one you’ll want will depend on how you want to plan the rest of your day’s activities.
The Kameoka Torokko station can be a good place to board the Sagano scenic train.
Kameoka is at the far end of the train line, so it means that getting on the train here you will be taking the scenic train TO Arashiyama.
So you can make the Sagano scenic train your first activity of the day, take the train from Kameoka, and then get off at the Arashiyama Torokko station!
The Arashiyama station can be a convenient place to end your Sagano scenic train ride because this leaves you in a good part of Arashiyama to start your exploration of the area!
It’s located a few minutes walk from the Okochi Sanso Gardens (and teahouse), and it’s also a few minutes walk to get to the path of the famous Arashiyama bamboo forest.
Kameoka torokko station as part of one day Kyoto itinerary
I took the Sagano scenic train as a part of my one day in Arashiyama and Sagano:
- Went to Kameoka torokko station to get on Sagano scenic train
- Got off scenic train at Arashiyama torokko station
- Walked around Arashiyama
How to get to Kameoka torokko station
aka…Â Kyoto Station to Umahori JR station to Kameoka torokko station
Like all torokko stations, there is easy access to the Kameoka torokko station by JR train.
In short, to get from Kyoto station to Kameoka torokko station:
- Kyoto station to Umahori JR train
- Walk from Umahori JR station to Kameoka torokko station
Kyoto station to Umahori JR train
At Kyoto station, you’ll find signs for trains to Saga-Arashiyama.
And that’s the train you’ll get on!
This train will take you to the Umahori train station.
I actually made a stop at Hozukyo station as a little side trip, and then got back on another train to get the rest of the way to Umahori.
From Kyoto station to Umahori is about a 25 minute train ride.
Walk from Umahori JR train station to Kameoka torokko station
Once you get to Umahori, you’ll start to see signs pointing you in the direction of the Kameoka torokko station, so just follow the signs!
They will start off in English, but then turn to Japanese only, so it could be good to know what you’re looking for in Japanese. You can take a picture of the sign with English on it.
Still, being a short walk of 10 minutes or so, it’s not too difficult to get to the torokko station.
This is a nice scenic walk with some views of Japan’s countryside!
If you’re going in the opposite direction, from the Kameoka torokko station to the Umahori JR station, you can look for the JR sign along the way too.
There’s also a small little cafe along the way.
This could be a nice place to rest for a bit before you catch the JR train back to Arashiyama.

There’s also a small ramen shop at the torokko station if you find yourself with some extra time before your scenic train to Arashiyama.
There’s also some special “torokko beer” located next to the gift shop on the same floor that you’ll buy your Sagano scenic train tickets.
They say this is the ONLY place that you can buy this torokko beer. 😉
Where to buy Sagano scenic railway train tickets
So you’ll make your way upstairs and that’s where you’ll find the gift shop along with the ticket booth.
This is also the same floor that the train departs.
And then…
Wait for the Sagano scenic train to arrive!
There’s also a tourist stamp you can get at the Kameoka torokko station too.
Then once the train arrives…
Take the Sagano scenic train to Arashiyama!
Arrive at Arashiyama torokko station!
And then…
What to do once you get to Arashiyama?!
You are minutes away by foot from the Okochi Sanso gardens (and teahouse) and Arashiyama bamboo forest!
And then since you’re in the area, you can also head to Tenryuji Temple and the Arashiyama monkey park too.
