So a trip to Kurama can make for a nice day trip from Kyoto.
There might be 3 main reasons to make a trip out to Kurama as a day trip from Kyoto.
It’s can be another cultural walk when you are in Kyoto!
1. Kurama-dera Temple
2. Kurama to Kibune hike
3. Kurama onsen hot spring bath
The Kurama onsen is about a 10-15 minute walk from the Kurama train station.
You can stay a night or more here, and you can also come just for the day too.

Kurama as part of one day Kyoto itinerary
I made a visit to Kurama as a part of a day trip to Kurama, Kibune, and Ohara with a one day pass:
- Kyoto station to Kurama
- Visit to Kurama-dera Temple
- Kurama to Kibune hike
- Visit to Kifune Shrine
- Kibune to Ohara bus
- Visit to Sanzen-in Temple
- Visit to Jakko-in Temple

So, if you’ve decided that you’re going to Kurama…
How to get to Kurama from Kyoto station?!
For the best way to get to Kurama at the time you’re trying to get there, Google Maps is pretty reliable when it comes to getting around Kyoto.
That said, here’s how I went from Kyoto station to Kurama!
In short, Kyoto to Kurama:
- Arrive at Kyoto station
- Kyoto station to Demachiyanagi bus (around 30-35 minutes)
- Go to Demachiyanagi train station (Eizan railway line aka Eiden)
- Demachiyanagi to Kurama train (around 30 minutes)
- Arrive at Kurama train station!
And here’s what it may look like!
Kyoto station
If you’re arriving to Kyoto by train, you’ll want to go to the central exit.
Once you exit, you’ll see the bus area pretty quickly.
There’s an information board there so you can look for the bus that Google Maps tells you to take.
There also might be people there to help you!
So you can ask them too how to get to the Demachiyanagi station.

Kyoto station to Demachiyanagi bus
This bus ride will likely be 30-40 minutes.
Arrive at Demachiyanagi train station
The bus will drop you off pretty close to the train station, so once you get off the bus, head on over to the Eizan railway train station.
If you don’t have a Kurama Kibune day pass or ICOCA card (or similar), you’ll first need to buy a train ticket.
And then you’ll go through the gate…
And then you’ll get on the train!
Demachiyanagi to Kurama train station
Now the easy part!
Grab a seat, enjoy the views, and wait until the final stop!
You don’t even need to pay attention to getting off at the right stop, since the Kurama train station is at the end of the line!
This train ride will likely be around 30 minutes.
Arrive at Kurama train station!
There are coin lockers for luggage storage at the train station.
And if you didn’t arrive with drinks and snacks, this is a good time to get some too!
There’s also tengu to be seen.
And off you go to Kurama!
